Natures Circles

“Nature Circles” developed in my heart and mind in 2004 when my sister was diagnosed with cancer a second time.  At my drawing board, speaking with her by phone, I thought about the circle of life, the passages of time and “Passages I” was born. With the many birds that frequent my garden, a small pond, an array of flowers and plant material, I always have subject matter.

“Passages I”

With the Ruby Throated Hummingbird’s that frequent my garden, the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly and caterpillar, the dragonfly and the soft pink of the hardy Gloxinia and the drama of black bamboo this painting remains a favorite of mine.

“Carolina Times”

With the Palmetto Palm and crescent shape moon as our state emblem, the Carolina Wren our state bird and Carolina Jessamine our state flower, this was an easy subject. I added the conch shell, which are plentiful on our coast and placed the Wren’s nest inside.

“Infinity”

This is a study of my garden, it takes you through the iron archway with some of my favorite flowers, pass the garden shed, hanging under the eaves is a buggy wheel from the Bowling farm, more flowers, black bamboo, trees, large stones, the small Koi pond, my cat “Cali” under the foliage of the Passion Vine, a dragonfly and one of the obelisk in the garden. Of course Ruby Throated Hummingbird’s abound. My garden teems with wildlife that inspires me everyday.

“Natures Glory”

This painting is a friend’s beautiful vegetable garden, with some of his favorite thing’s. This was such a fun painting, his beautiful vegetables in raised beds, a favorite old watering can, the garden shed with a collection of baskets, the iron crow on its roof. His tool rack, composting bin, the tiller tuck under the old tin tub, his favorite scarecrow keeping a watchful eye and always, Lady Bug’s, they make for a healthy garden.

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is a small public garden in our city, this is a beautiful spot with water running through the entire garden, paved walking trails take you through a canopy of trees, walk near falling water, fountains, picnic areas and sculpture’s.  The gardens have a large variety of wildlife which inspired me to paint the 4 Season’s.

Painting one each year and donating it to the gardens for their auction each spring, which is held the evening of the “Twilight in the Garden” event.

“Spring”

Walking past the pink Japanese Magnolia and pussy willow trees you enter a garden path to Josephine Hatcher’s woodland garden room, with trilliums, hellebores (Lenten Rose), woodland primroses and blue anemones. This is what I chose to paint that spring, there are many more flowers, ferns and trees in her garden room.

“Summer”

I focused on a popular spot in the garden, the Gazebo, with cone flowers and Carolina Jessamine. Through the summer you see Hydrangeas, daylilies, jewel weed and the birds, the blue jay was feeding that day, near by on a small pond was a Mallard duck and of course the Hummingbirds were out to play.

 “Autumn”

“Corrie’s Bridge” with Carolina Jessamine and maple leaves turning color, the Harlequin flower with its bright color, Hydrangeas with the last of the seasons Hummingbirds. An older man with his aide came to the garden almost daily for months during my visits, to sit, feed the ducks and birds. I thought they belonged in this painting.

  "Winter”

In this study I wanted to include Mr. Harold Hatcher’s bench under his favorite pecan tree, a place to rest when he was gardening. A stand of Bald Cypress, Witch hazel trees in bloom, Mahonia and Acuba plants help supply food for the wildlife. I have included Epimediums, Heartleaf wild ginger and a touch ofthe conifer garden. There is a Mallard duck flying in the background.  Winter gardens have so much interest there is textures, seeds and objects in the garden.
